The church located in the Area Sacra (Largo Argentina) was built in the Early Middle Ages on the podium and within the perimeter of a ruined temple from the Republican era; in 1132 under Pope Anacletus II (1130-1138) it was transformed into a three-aisled basilica with arcades on columns. In addition to the tufa columns of the temple, elements that have been preserved above an annular crypt include: a raised presbytery with a block altar, two T-shaped pillars indicating the course of the arcades of the nave, a large part of the apse wall with remains of frescoes, fragments of a façade rose window attributable to the 13th century, and the remains of the apse of a northern chapel added in the 13th century.
